NYI Rolls Its Own CDN

We’ve seen various network operators build CDN infrastructure over the years, but how about a data center and cloud operator? NYI yesterday did just that, launching its Fault Tolerant Web service.

NYI operates data centers in New York and New Jersey with additional locations in Seattle and Los Angeles. That’s also where their initial CDN nodes are, but the company is planning to add more of them beyond their own physical footprint.

The idea is to offer their customers some of the key capabilities they might otherwise have shopped for from an outside CDN — distributed caching, load balancing, high availability, security, and scalability. But in principle, the infrastructure they have built is not limited to their own colo and cloud customers, but could help accelerate websites hosted anywhere.

They’re not likely to topple Akamai single handed of course, but it’s interesting to see someone like NYI trying this at all. CDN operators have been branding themselves as part of the cloud for a while, but those who have started out in the colo/cloud world haven’t generally tried to expand their cloud-based services across the border.

Perhaps some of the walls between earlier internet infrastructure classifications are fading away, and their replacements are still forming.
