Int’l roundup: Level 3, Teliasonera, AT&T, NTT, PCCW

Here’s some quick takes on news from three global backbone operators:

With the world cup on the way soon, Level 3’s Vyvx is going to be busy as they always are with sporting events. Yesterday, they revealed a contract with Mexico’s TV Azteca to deliver the games from Brazil to Mexico City over diverse routes. The Global Crossing purchase gave Level 3 the network assets to do this sort of thing in Latin America of course.  All pistons seem to be firing at Level 3 for the first time in its 16 year history.

Teliasonera International Carrier won two connectivity deals over in the EMEA region over the past few days. The Swiss energy company Landis+Gyr has signed on for a 5 year deal hooking up 100 offices around the world. They were an existing customer for services in northern Europe, so this is an upgrade. Meanwhile, Melita, an ISP on the Mediterranean island of Malta, has linked up to TSIC’s global IP backbone. Melita extended its reach to Milan two years ago, which is where they’re picking up the connectivity in this case.

Before it upgraded its revenue growth guidance this morning on the strength of wireless, AT&T yesterday announced an interesting government contract renewal. AT&T Government Solutions will be providing the US Navy with cloud-based VoIP enterprise 911 routing and call handling across the country. It’s a $10.4M contract that continues existing service, but I’ll bet the last time it came up they didn’t call it cloud-based VoIP enterprise 911.

The Japanese giant NTT Communications is teaming up with Cisco and Cyan at NANOG 61.  They’re providing 100G to the event in Bellevue, Washington via Cisco’s routers and Cyan’s packet-optical gear.  100Gbps to a conference is a heck of a lot of bandwidth, but I suppose that was the point.

In the Far and Middle East, we have another IPX interconnection. PCCW Global and Etisalat have signed a group framework agreement for voice interconection. I’ve been seeing a lot of IPX partnerships and alliances forming in this part of the world.
