TeliaSonera International Carrier has had two interesting announcements this week: a US metro expansion and a new global wireless data roaming effort. They now have 24,000 route kilometers of fiber in their US network.
TSIC has been expanding its US footprint steadily for the last year or two, adding new markets and even more dark fiber to its network. Today they revealed an expansion and upgrade of their presence in the Dallas metro area. With additional PoPs; direct fiber connectivity to Carrollton, Richardson, and 400 South Akard Street; and a supercore setup at 1950 North Stemmons and 2323 Bryan Street, TSIC says it is looking not just at Texas but the gateway Dallas offers to Mexico and further south into Latin America.
And on the wireless data front, they’ve taken their IPX network and launched a Diameter Roaming Exchange. The DRX will let LTE networks exchange wireless data directly, thus enabling to more seemlessly offer 4G access outside their own footprints. Such options will be a bigger deal over in Europe for now, but will surely become more and more important everywhere else over time.
Of all the international divisions of European PTTs, TeliaSonera International Carrier seems to be on the most aggressive footing these days. It has been on an entirely organic level so far, but I wonder if at some point that might spill over into the M&A arena.
