Level 3 Communications has picked up the network services piece of a federal contract. The defense contracting giant Northrup Grumman has picked them to support the US Air Force’s Distributed Mission Operation Network, or DMON.
That means connecting some 50 sites around the world with bandwidth capable of carrying the data necessary for virtual combat training for personnel spread out around the world. That means high-res imagery and real-time communications between widespread sites with security and low latency. Not telepresence yet, perhaps, but a demanding task nonetheless.
Northrup Grumman picked up DMON 2.0 last July, but had the prior DMON contract as well. Level 3 was already providing thernet private line and dedicated internet access for that one, so this is more of a renewal and expansion perhaps.
