CenturyLink Expands Its Gigabit Plans to Vegas

October 10th, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

CenturyLink (NYSE:CTL, news, filings) says it is expanding the Gigabit fiber pilot it began in Nebraska out into Nevada. They plan to bring FTTH technology to selected neighborhoods in Las Vegas starting this fall.

They only just started out with the Omaha pilot in May of this year, so why add a new market and still call it a pilot? Either it has been going really well, or just maybe they’re trying to plant a flag in Sin City before Google does.

For example, AT&T is apparently taking on Google’s Austin 1Gbps plans head on. But can there be any doubt that if AT&T had started a pilot there first that Google would have found an easier target?

Hence, while incumbents still aren’t that gung ho for the economics of FTTH, it follows that they may act to proactively defend their best markets where it does make the most sense.  Of course, that may be precisely what Google was aiming for too.

But for Las Vegas, it means 1Gbps connections – at least to a lucky few initially.
