We have another of Europe’s independent internet exchange operators that is coming to America. Frankfurt-based DE-CIX announced this morning that it will be establishing internet exchanges in markets around the USA, starting with the New York metro area.
DE-CIX says it will deploy a large-scale Ethernet switching fabric on a metro fiber backbone capable of supporting multi-terabits per second. They didn’t mention which data centers they’ll start out with, but it is New York and there are plenty of possibilities. DE-CIX has also been branching out in the Middle East with an exchange in Dubai of course.
This is the third such announcement in the space of a month or so that promises to bring European-style internet exchanges to the US market as aimed for with the Open-IX framework. Last month Digital Realty announced plans to move into the space, and LINX has kicked off an effort down in the DC/Northern Virginia market recently starting with EvoSwitch. No doubt there will be more such announcements to come.
