Int’l Roundup: Teliasonera, AT&T, KDDI, NTT, Level3

Here’s a quick roundup of news from international network operators this week:

Teliasonera International Carrier continued its 100G rollout with a further expansion in London. They’ve now added another 100G PoP at Equinix’s LD5 facility in Slough, with direct connection to Paris and their London metro network. TSIC has been making its presence felt lately in the backbone world.

AT&T picked up another US Federal contract to go with those post office deals from last week. They’ve won a deal worth up to $31M for managed VPN services and MTIPS secure internet access for 93 sites of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. AT&T picked up the contract via the Networx contract vehicle, which has finally been gaining its stride of late.

Japan’s KDDI has announced the opening of a global NOC in Vietnam, specifically in Ho Chi Minh City. The new NOC will handle operations and maintenance for the Southeast Asian region generally, giving KDDI a local presence albeit in an unlikely location. Vietnam has come a long way, but Ho Chi Minh City isn’t exactly Singapore either. KDDI’s move suggests there are further opportunities in the country that they may be pursuing.

Meanwhile, NTT America says it is expanding its service capabilities. They’re expanding their NTel Ops automated infrastructure management service and launching an MPLS-grade VPN service as well. The additional capabilities will improve their ability to support full IT outsourcing, something the Japanese-based NTT has been putting in place worldwide.

And Level 3 is apparently not done with the current window in the credit markets. They’re supposedly looking to refinance another $595M loan due in 2016 with another due in 2020. Level 3 has always been active whenever the credit markets are favorable of course, and earlier this week had already done an $815M refinancing of one of its bank loan tranches.
