Three interesting stories to look at from the European theatre: an enterprise channel win for euNetworks, another gaming CDN/IP win for Level 3, some more Mediterranean breadth for Interoute, and Rascom goes 100G to Russia.
The solutions provider Norisco is providing a suite of IT services spanning networking, unified communications, data centre, and security for the open music platform 7digital in London. The network underlying that solution has been built off of dark fiber from euNetworks, hooking up a new 7digital office location to the company’s data center. euNetworks has been positioning itself for the bandwidth awakening of European enterprises, whose fiber appetite has lagged their US counterparts somewhat.
Level 3 is helping the French gaming outfit Metaboli with a colo, high-speed IP, and CDN combination. Metaboli provides downloads and subscriptions to some 1,300 games, and is expanding its presence worldwide and especially into the U.S. Is it just me or has the number of gaming titles out there been growing out of proportion lately? Who even has time to go through a catalog that big looking for the right one? Today’s youth I guess, as I suppose I was envisioning a trip to the mall to look at shrink-wrapped packages instead of an app store with a pre-stored credit card.
Interoute has teamed up with both Tunisiana and Orange Tunisia for a new cable connecting Europe to, you guessed it, Tunisia. Alcatel-Lucent technology will power the 170km system connecting the Tunisian city of Kélibia to the Sicilian city of Mazara del Vallo. Some 2,200 years since Hannible rode Elephants from Carthage to Rome via a rather higher latency route, there will be some major potential bandwidth between the two cities. The system is planned for next April, will be called Didon, and will reach 8Tbps per operator.
And finally, RASCOM is joining the 100G bandwidth, claiming the first such link between Russia and western Europe (although Teliasonera would probably disagree with that characterization!). Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical gear is powering the upgrade to Rascom’s 8.600km network, which connects Moscow and St. Petersburg to Amsterdam and Frankfurt via Scandanavia.
