Metro Bytes: Comcast, Ciena, Sunesys, 24/7, Integra

It’s time for a quick rundown of metro fiber news this week with build-out news from Comcast, Ciena, Sunesys, 24/7 Mid-Atlantic, and Integra:

Comcast Business has built out its fiber network to bring the Pease International Tradeport up in Portsmouth, NH online. That will bring some 250 local businesses with about 7,800 employees within range of the cable MSO’s Metro Ethernet and other voice and data services. Like the other cable operators, the SMB market has been very good to Comcast lately.

Ciena won another stimulus-derived deal up in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Broadband Initiative is using their 6500 packet-optical gear to light their fiber for 40G now, with 100G capability in hand. MassBroadband 123 is powered by a $45.4M federal stimulus grant plus a $26.2M from the state itself, and covers 1,200 miles hooking up 120 communities and 1,400 of those community anchor institutions.

Sunesys finished up a project in Pennsylvania this week. They’ve been building statewide fiber routes hooking up Philadelphia, Lancaster, York, Harrisburg, State College, Altoona, Pittsburgh, Erie, Allentown, and Reading. Pennsylvania is the company’s deepest regional market, with a whole lot of infrastructure in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Now they’ve got more regional depth to go with it.

In Washington DC, 24/7 Mid-Atlantic Network continued its buildout efforts. They’ve now brought CoreSite’s DC1 facility downtown on-net. They’ve been quite active so far this year, selling fiber out on their Delmarva footprint and hooking up an Expedient facility in recent weeks.

And out in Seattle, Integra won the honor of providing bandwidth to one of the greener corners of corporate America. They’re providing fiber connectivity plus a suite of other services to the Bullitt Center, which has been billed as the world’s most environmentally sustainable office building in the world. Integra’s cloud-based services are helping them reach a net-zero energy footprint.
