Several interesting items from the metro and regional fiber segment this week:
You know 100G is definitely here when it gets all the way to northwestern Ohio. Independents Fiber Network have teamed up with Cyan for a successful demonstration of both 100G wavelengths and 100GbE circuits over their regional network. The demo was powered by Cyan’s new single-slot DTM-100G coherent transponder module, and covered 500 route miles through 7 cities with an end-to-end latency of 4.2ms.
In Chicago, PinPoint Network Solutions is expanding its footprint. They’ll be announcing a new node in the 350 E. Cermak carrier hotel during ITW next month. Pinpoint runs a fiber network between Chicago and Denver, with special emphasis on data centers in between, such as in Des Moines and Omaha. Connectivity to 350 E. Cermak will let give their Ethernet business a wider scope.
Down in Texas, the SXSW 2013 event and its internet consultants at RightRound are drawing on local assets to give it the bandwidth infrastructure it needs. Alpheus Communications and Alpha Omega Wireless will be supplying a 1Gbps microwave circuit from its East 6th Street hub in Austin to the top of the event’s hotel downtown and on via WiFi to the tents from there. Can’t have those high-powered celebrity twitter feeds delayed…
And yesterday we saw TW Cable poach some business services talent from rival MSO Cox. Veteran Phil Meeks will move over to TW as EVP and COO of their business services segment. Meeks was one of the driving forces behind Cox’s SMB push, which has made a real dent in the market. At TW, he’ll no doubt be looking to do much of the same.

That PinPoint route went to 600 S. Federal, while their Chicago – NOLA route went to 350 E. Cermak. years ago when working on a project, I proposed that they link their two locations together. It appears they finally did it. Their microwave network goes to the Chicago metro, but doesn’t seem to interconnect with their fiber.
