Int’l Vendor Roundup: ADVA, Alcatel-Lucent, Calix, Ericsson

Lots of news this week by vendors from around the world, here’s a look at items from ADVA, Alcatel-Lucent, Calix, and Ericsson:

ADVA Optical won a 100G contract with Kabel Deutschland. The German cable MSO will be deploying ADVA’s 100G DWDM and multi-degree, directional ROADM gear for a national backbone hitting 26 major nodes and more than 50 intermediate sites. They’ve had a 100G trial link between Hamburg and Berlin prior to this, which apparently made the grade.

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU, news, filings) had two successful international trials of VDSL2 vectoring this week. Both China Telecom and Tunisie Telecom tested the technology, which brings speeds up to 100Mbps to copper. It may not be fiber to the home, but 100Mbps down and 40Mbps up is nothing to sneeze at for cases where fiber just isn’t an option yet.

Calix took a trip to Italy for a contract win with Interplanet. The northern Italian service provider is using their Ethernet platform to launch business fiber services combining VDSL2, GPON, and point-to-point gigabit Ethernet. Initially they’ll be offering 10-50Mbps GPON and Ethernet connectivity pllus voice, data, and cloud in Verona, with Padua up next and residential services in the future.

And the Swedish giant Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC, news, filings) has found a test subject for its Psi-Coverage technology. Vodafone Egypt is putting the gear through its paces, seeking to reduce power consumption in its 3G mobile network. The initial results saw a 40% reduction, mostly from a reduction in the number of radios needed. The Psi comes from the shape of the antenna that does the job, which looks like the Greek letter.
