It’s still Kansas, but Google Fiber is starting to look beyond Kansas City. In a blog post this week they revealed their intentions to add another city to their 1Gbps FTTH roll-out. So who is the lucky city? It’s the nearby suburb of Olathe, about 20 miles to the southwest.
On Tuesday, Olathe’s city council approved an agreement that paves the way for those gigabit speeds. Olathe is the fourth-largest city in Kansas, and won’t be the only KC suburb to land Google Fiber. Google says they hope this is the first of several such announcements.
The footprint expansion will not affect the scheduled roll-outs in either of the Kansas Cities on each side of the river, according to Google. That suggests the company is expanding its scope in other ways as well, which broaches the question of where they will go next.
For now it’s still largely a demo project, albeit one that is still growing. Will they ever decide that the model works so well that another metro area is in order? Seems like an FTTH revival is about due in the USA whether Google powers it or not.
