América Móvil AMX-1 submarine cable system took another few steps toward reality yesterday. The Latin American giant and Alcatel-Lucent are preparing to get the new 100G system ready for commercial service by the end of 2013. They just got regulatory approval from Mexico a few months back.
I’m still looking for a map (anyone?), but AMX-1 will land eleven times in seven countries: three times in Brazil, twice in Florida, twice in Colombia, plus once each in Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. In all, it will span 17,500km, which Alcatel-Lucent and América Móvil say is the longest 100G project so far, although none of the individual legs is quite that long I’d say.
The surveys are complete and the manufacture of the cable and repeaters is underway. At full theoretical capacity, AMX-1 would be able to carry some 50Tbps. That’s one heck of a big pipe for the Latin American region no matter how big the growth rates are, apparently Carlos Slim is thinking very long term here.
There’s lots of fiber activity going on under the waves between the Americas right now, with Seaborn’s Seabras-1 route surveys underway, Globenet’s recent 40G upgrade and extension to Colombia, and Columbus Networks 100G upgrade plans, not to mention all the other projects that are at earlier stages in development (Telebras, WASACE).

I couldn’t find a network map either, but the following map:
http://www.guya.com.mx/guya/Documentos/Noticias/2013/enero/razon20130131b.jpg
does mention the cities where the cable will land in. 🙂
Here’s a map that has the route:

If you leave an email address I can email the map to you.
You can always reach Telecom Ramblings with relevant links and information at the address info@telecomramblings.com
Here is another map where you can highlight any single fiber network and has the America Movil Submarine Cable System-1 (AMX-1):

I actually helped to build this network. One of the landing points is in the data center I sold a few years ago in Florida. This thing is a monster and is going to have unlimited capabilities in the years to come!
