If there’s one thing Sidera Networks has excelled at over the past year, it’s hooking up every data center within range of its fiber. Today they kept the trend going out in Chicago with a newly expanded route to Elk Grove to the north and the major data center park it hosts.
The Chicago footprint that Sidera inherited from the RCN days was mostly downtown, but the company has put a lot of effort into building new routes out to key suburban locations. The three facilities in Elk Grove now connected to their fiber are Equinix’s CH3, Dupont Fabros’s CH1, and Savvis’s CH3, with both dark and lit services from 100Mbps to 100Gbps available.
Just a month ago, Sidera agreed to merge with Lightower in a blockbuster holiday surprise M&A move. Their Chicago presence is the one piece of the combined infrastructures of the two companies that isn’t along or near the northeastern corridor. After their merger is completed, I continue to wonder if they won’t seek out further inorganic opportunities in between to fill in the gaps. But the likeliest candidate would have been First Communications, if Zayo hadn’t gotten their first.
