Metro Bytes 1/18: Logix, Alpheus, Transtelco, MegaPath

Time to catch up on the news from the metro space, with two buildouts in Texas, one south of the border, and a couple of contracts on the east coast:

Logix Communications says it has added 140 ‘Smart Buildings’ to its network across its Texas and Oklahoma turf to bring their total to 603. Not just any buildings either, but ones that add up to 14 million square feet of space to their overall footprint. I hadn’t realized Logix had that big an on-net fiber footprint.

Alpheus Communications has also been on the move in Texas, bringing several major downtown buildings on-net in Houston. They’ve built fiber into 1001 Fannin, Two Allen Center, and 601 Travis. Since being bought by the Gores Group, Alpheus has been transitioning to a more aggressive stance when it comes to expanding its fiber reach and taking on the enterprise market.  Just one month ago went out and bought Net Star to increase it’s Houston depth.

Further to the south, the border crossing fiber specialist Transtelco says it has completed a metro fiber build in Mexico City. They’ve built a multi-duct, multi-ring network down there, which they will connect up to their network assets in the southwestern US and northern Mexico and the border crossings at McAllen and Laredo. It’s an important addition to their asset base, as customers with cross-border needs generally need to get down to the Mexican capital more often than anywhere else.

And finally, MegaPath continued to chart its course away from mere access and into multi-site managed services and the cloud with two interesting enterprise contract. They have completed an MPLS network upgrade for Tedeschi Food Shops, which is a Massachussetts-based convenience store operator. The solution mixes EoC, T1, and DSL access to bring together some 200 locations.  Over in California, MegaPath has been selected by Drew’s Entertainment for hosted exchange, cloud hosting, and hosted voice for their newly relocated Green Brook NJ office. Drew lost its existing facility and servers to Hurricane Sandy and decided to go virtual in response.
