Colo Bytes 1/15: Cologix, Amazon, Digital Realty, Terremark, Interoute

Here’s a quick review of some colo and cloud news out already this week from Cologix, Amazon, Digital Realty, Terremark, and Interoute:

Cologix (news) continued the process of unifying all the data center and interconnection assets they have acquired under a single product umbrella. Today they launched the Standard Connections product line that they’ve been selling in Toronto in their other markets of Dallas, Minneapolis, Montreal, and Vancouver. Customers can deploy a switch or router within Cologix’s environment and thus cheaply build connections in a given market.

Data Center Knowledge says that COPT’s recent buildout announcement in northern Virginia is Amazon at work.  The 200K and 115k square foot server farms will come online over the next two years, adding more muscle to Amazon’s AWS service.  The company’s US-East cloud region is also its oldest and most crowded and downtime-prone.  Some elbow room is in order I guess.

Digital Realty Trust (NYSE:DLR, news, filings) has kicked off a private placement of its 2025 notes. The datacenter REIT has had little trouble finding places to put capital to work, and will use the new funds both to temporarily repay borrowings under its credit facility and to do more of its core property acquisition and development activities. They’ve also been adding to their executive team, bringing in John Sarkis as VP of Connectivity & Carrier Operations yesterday and Matthew Miszewski as SVP of Sales last week.

Verizon Terremark announced an expansion of its Enterprise Cloud service this morning within both their Dallas and London facilities. They’ve also extended their federal-grade security controls to all commercial customers, and have added instance-based computing and storage. Verizon has made more of the Terremark acquisition than I expected, putting substantial resources behind the assets.

And finally, Interoute achieved a milestone at its Paris data center, gaining ISO 27001 certification. It’s the sixth of their nine European facilities to be certified, as they continue to add to their ICT business presence. Interoute looks like a consolidator to me this year in Europe.
