Cloud and CDN provider Akamai (NASDAQ:AKAM, news, filings) is expanding its local presence in Latin America. Of course, they’ve delivered content in this part of the world for a long time, and have a sales office in Sao Paolo. But today they opened a services and support center in San Jose, Costa Rica as a first step toward a larger local presence.
Akamai says it is responding to significant demand for its products across the region, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Mexico, and Peru. They cite a 40% boost in IP addresses in Brazil served by their platform over the prior year according to their most recent state-of-the-internet report. That’s one example of course, and there are many more. Latin America is hot right now when it comes to bandwidth.
Locally based tech services and customer care will let Akamai put forth a stronger competitive case. They may in part be feeling the need for it in response to the effort that rival CDN operator Level 3 has been putting into its local CDN and Vyvx presence across Latin America lately.
Jim Ebzery will be leading the expansion as SVP and General Manager for the Americas, moving over from the Security, Management, and Operating Platforms business at Novell.
