Tata Communications (news, filings) won a global network services contract with the international cargo handler Cargotec. They’ll be serving WAN connectivity to over 150 sites in 50 countries across the globe, from the developed world to emerging markets.
Earlier this year, Indian-based telecommunications company finished off its global undersea fiber loop with the TGN-EA cable system connecting India to Europe. Owning the actual fiber systems along so many shipping routes and into so many ports gives them a leg up in competing for this kind of contract against the likes of Verizon, AT&T, NTT, and Orange Business who seem to come up the most often for this sort of deal.
Tata has been growing in stature in the industry for some years now, eclipsing its rival Reliance of late in particular. Reliance is still looking for ways to reduce its debt load after shelving its proposed IPO of its own submarine cable systems, having never actually turned FLAG into the fiber loop around the globe that was once envisioned.
What Tata has not done as much of lately is buy fiber assets to complement its global infrastructure. They did consider making a real bid for C&W Worldwide earlier this year though before giving way to Vodafone, and so I wonder if we won’t see them show up for another deal somewhere. Hmmm, Tata plus XO perhaps? Nah, they’d probably still be looking at Europe given the relative bargains available there.

Given Ichan’s recent activity, what about the reverse of what you proposed? I know Tata is a conglomerate, so only the international telecom parts.
