The Pacific regional operator Pacnet (news) and the DWDM protagonist Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN, news, filings) have collaborated in a demonstration Infinera’s new flagship DTN-X gear in Asia. They tested the 500Gbps PICs on 4500km of the C2C undersea cable network, successfully transmitting more than 3Tbps. The test boosts Infinera’s case when it comes to using the new gear on ultra-longhaul submarine cable systems.
Infinera has just started shipping its 500Gbps PIC technology this quarter, and they’re looking to take a bigger share of the DWDM market as carriers move to 100G. But they’re going out of their way to emphasize the superchannels rather than the individual waves. With the wiggle room available for future individual wavelength capacity, it does seem likely that we will finally see a decoupling of the size of the pipes that carriers buy from the underlying line speed.
For its part, Pacnet is said to be on the market, with Indonesia’s PT Telekom apparently doing the bidding. As Reliance Globalcom and apparently Bharti are also looking to monetize part of their APAC submarine assets, and with Cable & Wireless already sold to Vodafone, it seems like some folks are calling the top when it comes to Pacific submarine fiber assets.
