Yesterday, Zayo Group (news, filings) announced another expansion market for its fiber-to-the-tower initiatives. With an unnamed customer contract in hand, Zayo is planning to add an additional 165 route miles of fiber and 123 new towers to its network in Phoenix, Arizona. That will expand their route miles in Phoenixby 60% and roughly double the current number of on-net buildings, while expanding northwest into the suburbs of Peoria, El Mirage, and Sun City and northeast into Fountain Hills.
Zayo first entered Phoenix by buying 56+ route miles of unwanted fiber from Citynet back in 2008. More recently boosted it further with a bit more from 360networks, but obviously they have been building organically since 2008 to get where they are now. They’ll have even more soon though, as Phoenix is one of AboveNet’s Tier-1 markets — albeit one of their smaller ones. But if one looks closely, it seems as if Zayo’s footprint already touches almost everything that AboveNet’s does in Phoenix, so perhaps the situation doesn’t change much.
