Alternative CDN and now cloud services provider Limelight Networks (NASDAQ:LLNW, news, filings) is still expanding its list of carrier partners. Today they added one south of the border, Bestel, who will be launching Limelight’s cloud-based suite under its DigiContent brand. That will let them serve the video production, management, and delivery needs of Mexican corporations without having to start from scratch.
Bestel operates the second largest fiber network in Mexico, covering some 25,000km. They are also a part of Grupo Televisa, which if you’ll recall was one of the joint winners of the fiber auctioned off a year or two ago by the state power utility CFE to help promote an alternative to Telmex. I presume some of that fiber is in Bestel’s hands, although I’m not quite sure how Televisa, Telefonica, and Megacable were handling things.
After a turbulent 2011 in which it sold off part of itself and was rumored to be imminently sold to Level 3 several times, Limelight has not been making as many headlines so far this year. They have been working organically to transform themselves into a cloud provider who also has a core CDN offering, following a similar path as Akamai but on a lower budget and a thinner tightrope as always. I’ll be curious to see their Q1 results to see how things are going.
