Friday Roundup 12/9: Alpheus, Telarus, Atlantic Metro, Cavalier

TGIF, two weekends to go before Christmas. Here’s a quick rundown of news from the industry that I didn’t get to earlier:

Down in Texas, Alpheus Communications (news) is now offering E-LAN services to enterprises across its footprint. The new product features multipoint-to-multipoint connectivity with COS/QOS of course. Alpheus agreed to be purchased by the Gores group earlier this fall, however I don’t think that the deal has closed yet. When it does, Gores may combine it with First Communications to create a platform for further consolidation.

Master agent Telarus (news) has signed on with CBeyond to snag a piece of the alternative operatore’s cloud offerings. CBeyond has been adding cloud-based managed services to its product lineup as part of an effort to derive more revenue from the company’s SMB customer base and thus drive higher margins. Telarus has integrated CBeyond’s products into its real time quoting system, enabling its 600 agents to start selling.

Atlantic Metro Communications (news) says that its Virtual Private Data Center as a Service has achieved VMware vCloud Powered status, meaning that they’re leveraging a whole suite of VMware products to power their cloud. They’ll be debuting the service on January 1 and targeting the SME space.

And in on the eastern seaboard we heard more news of Windstream’s plans for PAETEC. Remember the telephony and triple play residential footprint of Cavalier? Apparently Windstream’s interest in competing nationally beyond their footprint applies only to the business market, they won’t be selling any more of the residential stuff except to maintain current subscribers. The company will be cutting 70 jobs in the Richmond area (ouch) as part of its integration efforts, but will still be around in force for business customers. Actually, I had thought PAETEC would have torpedoed the residential stuff already, but I guess they hadn’t decided what to do with it yet.
