Midwestern fiber operator Unite Private Networks took another aggressive step forward from its rural E-Rate roots. Yesterday they opened up a new regional intercity network across the Colorado ‘Front Range’.
The expansion connects up their local networks in Denver, Aurora, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo, with a further buildout to Longmont in the works for 2012. The additional connectivity allows them to expand their customer base to enterprises and organizations with regional fiber needs, such as for disaster recovery. Their Pueblo data center fits in well with those plans too. The map to the left isn’t a fiber map, as I don’t have one of this buildout yet – it’s just of the Front Range overall.
UPN picked up additional funding last year from Ridgemont Equity Partners, and has been putting it to work all year long with a string of new projects. This one suggests the company is ready to grow beyond their usual tight E-Rate focus, although I’m sure they’ll be continuing with plenty of those deals as well.
