Teliasonera Helps CDNetworks Expand

October 25th, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

TeliaSonera AB (ETR:TLS, news, filings) International Carrier said this morning that it has won an expanded agreement for IP transit and colocation throughout the US and Europe with CDNetworks. The Korean-based CDN and managed services company entered the US and Europe in force via its acquisition of Panther Express two years ago, and remains one of the largest CDNs internationally.

CDNetworks of course recently agreed to be purchased by Japan’s KDDI. While that acquisition is not complete (as far as I know), such a relationship with Teliasonera seems like it would fit well with KDDI as well.  Just what KDDI’s long term plans are for CDNetworks’ international presence remains to be seen although those deep pockets certainly won’t hurt their expansion potential.  The two will be exploring other synergies and alignment, but initially there will be no changes to CDNetworks’ existing operations according to the company.

For its part, Teliasonera International Carrier has been perhaps the most assertive of the European incumbents in the transit and content marketplaces. They’re the only one of that group in the top 10 in the Renesys rankings, in fact.  They also built their own CDN infrastructure over the past couple of years – although I’ve heard little about that part so far.
