The first Friday of Autumn, hope your week has been as good as mine was for once. A few interesting items on the international front before you go:
TE Subcom and Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU, news, filings) have expanded their undersea cable alliance to the entire North Pacific. The two have had a joint maintenance program boosting each company’s ability to maintain and repair undersea cables. The past decade has seen some very profile cable breaks in the region, including those caused by the recent earthquake that devastated so much of Japan and that smaller but perfectly aimed one off Taiwan a few years back. Always work to do somewhere for those cable ships.
Pacnet took another step towards being a cloud services provider with the launch of a virtual private server product, its first foray into IaaS. They’re starting off down under in Sydney, but expect to expand to other locations across their footprint. What specific virtualization technology they are using wasn’t mentioned. I wonder if they’re doing this in those Data Landing Stations they’ve been building?
Speaking of clouds, Verizon Business added a customer to its Enterprise Cloud. Global chemical engineering company Mossi & Ghisolfi will be using it to support their ‘green’ goals and as the foundation of its new business IT environment. They’re already estimating a 5-9% reduction in power consumption by the end of the year. Can’t argue with that.
And finally, let’s go back to Alcatel-Lucent, which had a very busy week it seems. The equipment giant said this week it is helping China Telecom to expand its 3G network, doubling capacity and increasing coverage. 3G hasn’t really taken off in China just yet, and despite its name China Telecom is the #3 player in the mobile space behind China Mobile and China Unicom. But if they do better as consumers finally move toward 3G and eventually 4G, they could quickly make up ground.
