The Vyvx division of Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) is making progress in the college sports market. They announced today a new service aimed at bringing their professional sports broadcast services to universities, entitled Vyvx VenueNet Lite. It uses a university’s existing fiber infrastructure for connectivity across campus. That eliminates the need for satellite trucks and expedites the video feed booking process.
The University of Florida and various affiliated organizations are the first client of the new service, with which it will supoort HD delivery of the Gator Nation’s football, basketball, and baseball games amongst other content. They have three large sports venues and an on-campus studio and TV station.
Level 3 is on offense on nearly all fronts this year, trying to sustain and expand on their recent return to revenue growth. An expanded market opportunity for Vyvx can’t hurt that, especially since Level 3 has been bundling it with CDN and IP services to some success over the past couple of years.
Sooner or later the equation will change when the Global Crossing deal finally closes – an event that is still anticipated by the end of the year. Both companies have been asking regulators to get a move on lately.
