Friday Roundup: Teliasonera, AboveNet, Equinix, Interxion

Another week, another roundup to catch up with the stuff that I didn’t spot on my first troll through the news:

Remember that TAT-14 upgrade we heard about last month, the contract for which went to Mitsubishi Electric?  Well it looks as if TeliaSonera AB (ETR:TLS, news, filings) is the driving force behind it.  The company’s International Carrier division expects to become the consortium’s biggest stakeholder, increasing its stake by 67%.  The initial phase of the upgrade will add just 8x10G on the north leg and 4x10G on the south leg, but in phase 2 another 20x10G will come online on both legs.

Another week, another bunch of datacenters connected for abvt, as the company continues to power through its expansion despite all the M&A hoopla.  This time it was Cervalis, whose two datacenters in Stamford, Connecticut and Totowa, New Jersey will be brought on-net, with the former becoming an AboveNet PoP.  Cervalis’s two facilities cover some 300,000 square feet.

Etsy has moved into Equinix (NASDAQ:EQIX, news, filings)‘s Silicon Vally SV5 IBX.  The online merchandise marketplace was already operating off-site disaster recovery and storage in the colocation specialist’s New Jersey and Silicon Valley SV2 facilities.  Etsy isn’t just there for the cabinets though, but also for the ‘digital media ecosystem’ within the facilities – meaning social media websites and content providers who also happen to be neighbors and eventually partners.

Meanwhile, over at InterXion (NYSE:INXN, news) the color of the week is green – at least in Belgium.  The European carrier-neutral datacenter operator made a strategic decision to supply its facility there from ‘100% green energy’.  A lofty goal, but what if Green Lantern isn’t available?  Oh wait, I think they meant renewable sources… nevermind.  And Interxion also raked in a customer over in Germany, landing a contract with V-Private.  V-Private offers private IP/MPLS network services, especially for video in this case if the PR is any judge, though I’m not too familiar with the company.  They will be moving a significant part of its IT infrastructure into Interxion’s Frankfurt campus.
