Monday Bytes: MCG, EPB, CityFibre, Helium, AT&T

A bit of vendor M&A, some quantum, some FTTx, and some WiFi:

Mission Critical Group has made an inorganic move to expand its ability to meet demand in the data center space. They are acquiring DVM Power + Control, which manufactures a range of low- and medium- voltage electrical distribution equipment. The deal adds 350,000 square feet of production space in the states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Connecticut, giving MCG over 1M total. DVM will operate independently alongside JTS and Point Eight Power under MCG’s umbrella.

In the quantum, space, EPB and IonQ have partnered up for a new quantum technology center. IonQ will establish an office in Chattanooga and EPB will add a new quantum computer from IonQ to their existing infrastructure. They will both use the new capabilities for their own development efforts and sell access to other companies. The buildout of the EPB Quantum Center is expected to be complete in early 2026.

CityFibre says its first Project Gigabit customers in Hampshire are now online. The rollout is backed by £104m from the UK government and is targeting 75,000 homes and businesses across the region. It’s the 4th of 10 such contracts to reach this stage for CityFibre, through which the company hopes to reach 1.3M homes

And AT&T has tapped Helium’s WiFi reach to expand its own capabilities for customers. Helium’s decentralized, community-built network has some 90,000 hot spots deployed, two thirds of which are in the US and Mexico. Basically, Helium offers rewards to anyone who wants to build and own their own mobile or IoT hotspot.
