A new subsea cable, some dollars for data centers, a new infrastructure division, and fiber to the middle of a frozen lake:
At MWC this week, Sparkle and Turkcell revealed plans for a new subsea cable under the eastern Mediterranean. They signed an MoU that envisions a new cable between Izmir on the Turkish west coast and Chania on the island of Crete. From there it would leverage Sparkle’s BlueMed infrastructure to reach all the way back to Milan. The cable would carry 25Tbps per fiber pair.
Novva Data Centers and CIM Group have raised $2B in financing for data center projects in the western US. The funding from J.P. Morgan and Starwood Property Trust will go toward phase 2 and 3 of Novva’s buildout in West Jordan UT. When complete the campus will feature 175MW of capacity and a million square feet of space. Novva is also working on projects in Reno NV, San Francisco CA, and Mesa AZ.
Hylan has expanded its engineering and construction capabilities into a new area of infrastructure. They have launched a new Pipeline Division to complement their turnkey communications and electrical infrastructure capabilities. We are certainly seeing more overlap between these worlds in next generation technology.
And Gateway Fiber has added a new kind of ‘x’ for the abbreviation FTTx, hooking up something they only have way up north and only in the winter. That’s right, they built fiber to an ice fishing house ‘in the middle of Fish Lake’ in Maple Grove MN. Yep, they laid fiber across the ice to enable a bunch of fisherman to get in a bit of online gaming and host some podcasts. Calix provided the necessary WiFi. Needless to say, the ‘FTTIFH’ project will be somewhat temporary.
