Two interesting items touching legacy infrastructure in the US, some renewable energy, and a data center in a market we don’t hear about much:
AT&T has found a way to monetize some of its legacy real estate. They have entered into a structured sale/leaseback with Reign Capital for a set of central offices. The deal covers 74 properties spanning 13M square feet of space around the country and raises $850M in cash for the company. AT&T is planning to exit its copper network operations by 2029, and this deal enables them to only lease back the space they need for their network going forward.
Verizon is helping the New York City Fire Department to modernize its infrastructure. They will be replacing a legacy Centrex phone system with a new VoIP based solution, migrating some 2,500 lines over to LTE and 5G and such. I’m not sure what the last time since I typed the word Centrex might be, but it wasn’t this decade so I think I speak for many when I say it’s about time. FDNY has 218 firehouses, and 39 EMS stations, as well as a variety of other locations.
Down in South America, ODATA has lined up a significant renewable energy deal. They have signed an agreement with Atlas Renewable Energy to supply their facilities in Chile, whose infrastructure market has been growing rapidly. Atlas has renewable energy projects around Latin America, with three large scale solar projects in Chile as well as some wind and energy storage projects. ODATA’s parent is Aligned Data Centers.
And PAIX Data Centres will be building a new data center in the West African country of Senegal. The African data center provider will be built in Dakar, with the first phase of 918 square meters and 1.2MW of space to be ready next year. The buildout complements the company’s presence in Ghana, Kenya, and Djibouti and will leverage subsea cable connectivity on the ACE, MainOne, SAT3, SHARE, and soon 2Africa cables.
