There was an interesting bit of end-of-year consolidation in the managed services space yesterday. Comcast Business has signed an agreement to acquire Nitel from the private equity firm Cinven.
Based in Chicago, Nitel focuses on managed network, cloud, and security services in the enterprise space. They have about 6,600 customers, with a focus on mid-size enterprises across a range of verticals. Nitel has made a few deals of its own, buying WAN Dynamics earlier this year and Hypercore Networks in 2022. Those assets will complement Comcast Business’s somewhat more SMB-focused customer base, adding more managed capabilities to their portfolio particularly on the cloud side.
The deal suggests Comcast Business is ready to move into new niches in the enterprise space. The division of the cable giant has always moved very deliberately into new markets, making sure the path is very well paved before walking down it. But of course this isn’t their first managed services deal. In 2021 they bought Masergy, which targeted a similar type of customer base.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
