Three interesting technology deployments from around the world, and one federal contract win:

Colt Technology Services has trialed the next generation of optical gear over its piece of the Grace Hopper subsea cable. They have deployed Ciena’s 1.6Tbps WL6e technology to achieve what is being billed as the first ever 1.2Tbps wavelength transmission across the Atlantic. The new gear promises to power consumption by 50% and increases spectral efficiency by 15% over the previous generation. Colt plans to deploy the 1.6Tbps-capable technology on its production network.

South Africa’s Fibertime has tapped Nokia to expand its access platform into underserved regions of the country. They are deploying Nokia’s Lightspan FX OLTs and ONTs as they build out to 5 cities and 14 townships. The project will help create a ‘semi-mobile network’ within underserved areas via Wi-Fi 6 technology. Fibertime expects to deploy a half million ONTs over the next 3 years.

Elea Data Centers is prepping for major demand down in Brazil via a new deal with Vertiv for liquid cooling technology. The two have signed an agreement for ‘hundreds of CDUs’ that will go to supporting AI applications in São Paulo. Vertiv’s liquid cooling offers lower energy consumption and a PUE of 1.15 to 1.2, enabling support of high density AI deployments.

And Verizon Business has picked up another significant federal contract win. They announced a 24-month task order extension for their GNS contract with the Department of Defense. The contract was originally awarded 8 years ago, and the extension will boost its value past $98M. The extension envisions a point-to-point connection within Southwest Asia and aligns with the DOD’s mandate for the elimination of TDM from its infrastructure.
