Regional Roundup: Zayo, KWIKOM, Centranet, Nokia, DC BLOX, MCG

Four projects of regional and metro scope to talk about today:

Zayo is investing in an expansion of its 400G wavelength network within the key New York/New Jersey metro area. Backed by Ciena technology, they are optimizing their metro network in the region and linking into their intercity footprint. The move responds to growing demand from the financial and media & entertainment sectors, as well as from other carriers. Zayo’s longhaul footprint will be fully 400G enabled by the end of this year, and the NY/NJ metro upgrade should be ready in Q1 of next year.

KWIKOM is bringing 5Gbps fiber links to its customers across Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. KWIKOM, which is owned by WANRack LLC, is targeting both residential and commercial customers. The days when 1Gbps was enough for anyone are rapidly fading, and multi-gig services like this are cropping up everywhere.

Not far away, Oklahoma’s Centranet has teamed up with Nokia to demonstrate a 50G PON solution. The trial offers unprecedented connectivity to the Sac and Fox tribal nation, which sits between Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Centranet is the electrical cooperative in the area, and the live commercial trial leverages Nokia’s Lightspan solution. While 50G itself is for the future, the gear will support a range of multi-gigabit services of course.

DC BLOX has raised some new cash in a new funding round. They have added additional equity capital from both new and existing investors as well as secured a $265M green Senior Secured Credit Facilities load. The transaction will enable them to develop hyperscale edge sites and add 216MW of utility power. The southeastern data center and fiber operator says the move will enable $1B in total capital to be deployed across its footprint.

And Mission Critical Group is taking aim at the Alaskan market. Their MCFI division says it has sent 20 MicroGENIUS microgrids to Alaska’s OTZ Telecommunications Company. The deployment will provide off-grid power of more than a year in support of OTZ’s microwave network. Specifically mentioned is the link from Coldfoot Camp (deep inland) to Kotzebue (on the western coast).
