FTTx Roundup: Archtop, Empire, Burlington Telecom, Point Broadband

Four bits of last mile news, three from the northeast and one from the southeast:

Archtop Fiber’s expansion has come to Woodstock NY, home to the iconic music festival of 1969. They have an MoU in place with the town and hope to begin rolling out service by the end of this month. Also in the plans is a public Wi-Fi hotspot as well as free internet in town offices and space for the Woodstock PD to house equipment. The provider is also building out in nearby Kingston, Saugerties, Rhinebeck, and Warwick.

Empire Access has turned up its first services in Hazelton PA. The city, which is 40 miles south of Scranton, has about 14 miles of fiber network so far, with the full build expected to be complete by next summer. The New York based last mile provider began expanding south into Pennsylvania last year, starting in Williamsport, Erie and Scranton.

Burlington Telecom has brought fiber into Farrell Properties’ Sunset House. It’s the first MDU in Burlington to offer Fiber-to-the-Unit as an amenity to residents, bringing up to 5Gbps to 134 units. Sunset house is in the Cambrian Rise neighborhood on the shores of Lake Champlain.

And there a bit of FTTx consolidation down in Alabama. Point Broadband has announced the purchase of the residential cable and internet business of Riviera Utilities in Baldwin County, which lines the east side of Mobile Bay. Point Broadband, which operates in 10 states but is also headquartered in Alabama, has begun work on upgrading the network infrastructure.
