Uniti Group has picked up a significant 20-year contract with an unnamed hyperscale customer down in Alabama. Building upon an existing relationship, Uniti will be enabling connectivity between data centers optimized for ‘Generative AI’ while adding to its own reach in the state.
The project will see Uniti construct a new multi-duct system between Montgomery and Mobile, adding a key north-south diverse route. Within those ducts will be ‘several high-count fiber cables’ which will of course hook into existing regional and longhaul routes. Uniti has already been working on middle mile infrastructure in Alabama and is finishing construction on a route across Mobile Bay.
In the background of course is the previously announced merger between Uniti Group and Windstream, which would re-marry the two businesses after a decade apart. That deal won’t close for a year or so, but the new route between Mobile and Montgomery won’t be ready until then either. It does seem like the new infrastructure will fit into the proposed combined companies’ efforts quite well.
