Some government and R&E news plus a bit of FTTH vendor activity:
Verizon Business has won a significant chunk of federal dollars. They have been awarded a $77.7M task order to modernize the network infrastructure of the National Weather Service, which sits within the Department of Commerce. The upgrade will see NWS transition its voice and data services from Networx to EIS. Verizon also recently announced a 3-year agreement with NOAA to explore drone usage for the study of severe storms.
Infinera has won an R&E deal over in southern Europe. The Italian research and education network GARR will be using Infinera’s 800G coherent technology to double the current capacity of its GARR-T network infrastructure. As part of the upgrade, GARR will also expand its network over to Sardinia. The project will be completed by 2025 and give GARR 400Gbps or better throughout Italy.
Stratus Networks has tapped Precision OT’s OpenPath technology to expand its footprint. Stratus is looking to expand its PON infrastructure in central Illinois. The idea wil be to take aim at MDU opportunities among other things without getting locked into to particular vendors.
And Sitetracker and VETRO are partnering up. The two will pair Sitetracker’s GIS Link tool with VETRO’s FiberMap interactive mapping and asset inventory capabilities. They hope to be able to better serve the many fiber operators that are building out FTTH around the world these days.
