Thursday Bytes: American Tower, Megaport, Ciena, CityFibre

Four bits of infrastructure news from around the industry:

American Tower is taking a new approach at the edge. They have launched an Aggregation Edge Data Center product, which brings the AI ecosystem closer to businesses by leveraging its tower real estate. The first such facility broke ground in Raleigh NC last month and should be ready in Q1/2025 with a capacity of 4,000 square feet and 1MW out of 4MW at full buildout.

Megaport is teaming up with Aviatrix in a new partnership aimed at hybrid and multicloud environments. The arrangement pairs Megaport’s NaaS offerings with Aviatrix’s cloud networking and network security, enabling an integrated service offering. Both companies have a stake in the rise of hybrid IT environments for enterprise verticals like finance and healthcare.

Ciena has picked up a customer up in Norway. Sodvin AS will be using Ciena’s XGS-PON solution and a range of supporting gear to upgrade its broadband services in Trøndelag county. Trøndelag is the better part of what is known as ‘Central Norway’ to the north of the better known population centers of the south.

And CityFibre has finished off its primary build in another UK market. Their infrastructure in Wellingborough, a town in Northamptonshire about an hour north of London, is now ready for service. The project reaches some 20,000 potential homes via some 136km of fiber and cost some £14m since they kicked it off two years ago.
