Four bits of regional last mile news from around the US so far this week:
Windstream’s Kinetic is bringing some infrastructure aid to Greenfield, Iowa. Following the tornado that tore up the town, Kinetic will be investing $250K in buried fiber, almost tripling their fiber presence in the town and increasing weather resilience. The project will add 5.4 miles of new fiber connecting 320 locations, adding to the 12,400 route miles they have statewide.
New Mexico’s Statewide Education Network is officially now operational. The project has connected the 27 schools of the Gadsden Independent School District in Santa Teresa as well as 3 charter schools in Albuquerque with the help of Lumen. By 2027 they plan to have all New Mexico schools online by 2027. Some 900 miles of fiber have been delivered so far.
Consolidated Communications has brought Fidium Fiber deeper into Maine. Some 4,600 homes and businesses in Bar Harbor and Mount Desert can now access the service’s 2Gbps symmetrical speeds. The two towns make up up 2/3 of Mount Desert Island, including Acadia National Park. Fidium now reaches 260K homes across Maine.
And LiveOak Fiber has raised a bundle of cash for the next phase of its expansion. They have lined up $250M in financing underwritten by JP Morgan, which will go toward the company’s investments in the southeastern US. Through the present they have put $200M into some 1,000 miles of fiber with in Bay, Okaloosa, and Walton counties along the Florida Panhandle and in Camden, Chatham, and Glynn Counties along Georgia’s coastline.
