Three international projects that each touch the continent of Africa, and a federal contract.

One of the biggest subsea cable projects in the world has come ashore in the UK. Vodafone has announced the landing of the 2Africa cable system in Bude, Cornwall. When complete, 2Africa will stretch from the UK all the way down Africa’s west coast and back up the east coast and through the Red Sea back to France. Vodafone is not just the UK landing partner but is also part of the multinational consortium that includes China Mobile International, Facebook, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, stc, Telecom Egypt and WIOCC. Alcatel Submarine Networks is handling the construction.

SubCom and Telecom Egypt have completed a couple of subsea cable landings in Egypt. The India-Europe-Xpress cable system has come ashore at Zafarana2 on the Red Sea as well as at Sid Kerir on the Mediterranean. Terrestrial fiber connecting the two will connect the two segments, as is the usual pattern in the region. IEX will have 13 fiber pairs and stretch from Milan to Mumbai.

Liquid C2, which the managed services division of Liquid Intelligent Technologies, has become a Google Cloud Interconnect provider. The pan-African service provider says they are the first such provider in Africa, enabling their customers a direct link into the Google Cloud ecosystem. Liquid’s infrastructure stretches from Morocco to South Africa.

And MetTel has won a significant federal contract. The United States Postal Service has selected their POTS transformation solution across 17,000 locations nationwide. The project will, in theory, eliminate the USPS’s remaining dependence on copper-based voice lines, shifting circuit-switched systems to IP.
