Monday Bytes: Compass, Africa Data Centres, CityFibre, Nokia, Globe

Some data center activity, some FTTH, and a network upgrade to start the week:

Compass Datacenters has unveiled plans for a major new data center campus in Illinois. They will be re-developing the former headquarters of Sears in the suburbs northwest of Chicago, building 5 hyperscale facilities on 200 acres of land. Sears went under some 5 years ago, and following the pandemic there wasn’t sufficient demand for office space to keep it in that form. Compass just closed on the property last September, and will still take a year to complete the demolition of the existing structures.

Africa Data Centres has raised a war chest as it prepares for the next phase of growth. They have raised ZAR2 billion, which translates to about US$109M. ADC plans to use the funds to develop another 20MW of hyperscale data center space, adding to its footprint across Southern, East, and West Africa, although no specific project was mentioned. This funding was facilitated through a bespoke financing solution arranged by RMB, a division of FirstRand, a fully integrated financial services group in South Africa.

CityFibre’s expansion is reaching into a new bit of the UK. They will be rolling out fiber into more of Bognor Regis, a town and seaside resort area on the southern coast of England. The expansion will bring symmetrical 2.5Gbps connectivity into Middleton-on-Sea, Elmer Sand and Flansham.

And Nokia’s gear will be getting a workout in the Philippines. Globe Telecom will be upgrading legacy technology with Nokia’s Broadband Network Gateway solution and 7750 Service Router. The upgrade will target North Luzon, South Luzon, National Capital Region, Visayas and Mindanao, supporting the company’s wireline footprint and possibly prepare the way for some fixed wireless access in the future.
