A new data center and three interesting bits of vendor news from around the globe:

Colt Data Centre Services has announced a new project in Germany. They have begun construction of their third hyperscale data center in the German hub of Frankfurt. When complete, the new facility will add 32.4MW of IT power capacity in close proximity to the company’s existing location, with direct access to DE-CIX’s flagship internet exchange infrastructure.

Nokia’s gear will be getting a workout in India. Bharti Airtel has tapped Nokia to upgrade its transport network throughout across the company’s national long-distance footprint. The plans call for deployment of Nokia’s 1830 PSS-x OTN switches and supporting gear. Bharti Airtel is looking for increased capacity to meet the ongoing growth in traffic on its network.

Infinera has won some state dollars in support of its semiconductor production capabilities. They have been awarded a California Competes grant worth some $14M over 5 years by the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development. The funds will go toward further advancing Infinera’s indium phosphide-based PIC manufacturing capabilities.

And Ciena says that its gear will be supporting medical research down in New Zealand. One NZ, formerly known as Vodafone New Zealand, has won a tender to support REANNZ, the R&E network that connects researchers in the country to the rest of the world. Ciena’s 6500 and WaveLogic 5 Extreme technology will power that optical infrastructure, offering a path to 800Gbps.
