Lumen is bringing on some more talent, and by talent I mean AI. They have teamed up with Microsoft to deploy Microsoft 365 Copilot to empower its 30K employee base in a beta test under Microsoft’s Early Access Program..
That’s right, Lumen’s employees will be able to get Copilot to help them do things, from automating tedious tasks to assisting with data analysis and decision-making. Lumen hopes the capability will boost the productivity of its workforce. That includes things like summarizing content, adding depth to customer communications, creating presentations, and accessing instructional material. Not exactly taking charge of the NOC or anything Skynet-esque, which is a good thing.
We are currently hearing about how AI is now driving infrastructure investments across this industry, but this seems like an early case where that same technology is making inroads within the industry itself. How much will this use of AI help Lumen find the path to growth it seeks? Who knows, but I doubt we’ve seen the last of this sort of thing.
While I find much of the media bubble around AI to be a bit, umm, hyperbolic, this sort of usage case does seem like it could have some benefit. Of course, it could also serve as a distraction internally. But it’s a beta test, finding out is exactly what such things are for.
