The edge data center specialists at EdgeConneX have found a new global market to enter. Yesterday they announced the formation of a new joint venture with Aboitiz InfraCapital, the infrastructure arm of the eponymous Philippine conglomerate. The JV will look to built out data centers in the Philippines.
The Aboitiz Group has both land and renewable energy capacity on tap alongside its local market knowledge, all of which will certainly help accelerate the process. The first projects will be two data centers in the Manila metro area, the first being connectivity-focused near the local IX and the second being a hyperscale campus facility. Details on those projects have not yet been provided, but I’m sure we will learn more over time.
Not many markets so clearly illustrate the edge distribution problem quite as well as an archipelago like the Philippines does. It should be interesting to see what EdgeConneX and Aboitiz do beyond the Manila metro area over time. They have certainly become increasingly creative in their approach to markets beyond their original US footprint.
