Thursday Roundup: Lumen, Microsoft, NorthC, NL-IX, Digital Bridge, Edgepoint, Telefonica

I’m on the road the rest of this week, but one still needs to keep up with things.  Here are three bits of news to catch up on with:

Lumen and Microsoft have formed a strategic partnership. The two are seeking to combine the cloud depth of Microsoft Azure with Lumen’s edge computing capabilities. The long term collaboration will feature a certified Azure deployment able to run in Lumen’s edge nodes, solutions for private 5G networks that take advantage of both company’s technology, and managed solutions that leverage Microsoft software and cloud capabilities for business optimization. Lumen has selected Azure as its preferred public cloud venue for enterprise workloads.

NL-ix has connected a new regional data center up to its internet exchange footprint in the Netherlands. NorthC’s data center in Rotterdam Zestienhoven has been hooked up, the last of NorthC’s infrastructure to connect to the NL-ix fabric. NL-ix says that its platform in the Rotterdam/TheHague region generate 1.2Tbps of internet traffic, a position that derives from its takeover of the Rotterdam Internet Exchange in 2018.

Digital Bridge has found a new global infrastructure niche in which to seek growth. They have formed a new entity, EdgePoint Infrastructure, which will take aim at the wireless tower opportunity in southeast Asia. The company has secured 10K sites across Indonesia and Malaysia to go along with the controling stake in PT Centratama Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk it picked up last year. Industry veteran Suresh Sidhu will take on the CEO role at Edgepoint.

And Telefonica says it is aligning itself behind the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The global telecommunications provider issued a policy statement promising to better understand how its activities help society to prosper, generate trust, and build a digital and greener future. What that means in practical terms is less clear of course, as this is mainly words so far. But we will just have to see how it plays out I guess.
