euNetworks Puts Some HollowCore to Work

April 14th, 2021 by · 1 Comment

euNetworks has rolled a new weapon onto the battlefield in the low latency arms race over in London. The pan-European bandwidth infrastructure specialist has deployed CoreSmart hollowcore fiber from Lumenisity Limited on its first route in the London metro area.

The deployment connects the London Stock Exchange and a key Interxion data center. As a result, they have been able to reduce latency on that route by a third, leveraging the fact that light travels 50% faster down a hollow core than through glass itself. That advantage adds up at a rate of 3µs per kilometer, which is significant and potentially enables a fiber link to compete on raw speed with microwave.

Such fiber has been around for a while now, but due to complexity and cost hasn’t really caught on in commercially available networks. But it’s in the realm of low latency traders that this technology was always most likely to find a home.

Now that euNetworks has taken the first step down that path, we’ll have to see if they follow up elsewhere in the company’s euTrade platform around the rest of Europe. Certainly Lumensity is hoping they take that route!

Is this Earl St to Brick Lane? I know latency is an arms race but this seems like with a distance of ~1km, you’re not going to see a lot of saving
