Ciena has made another inorganic move on the software side of things. Yesterday the optical networking vendor announced its intent to acquire Centina.
Centina’s expertise lies in service assurance analytics and network performance management solutions. Ciena plans to integrate the company’s technology into its Blue Planet division, improving its ability to provide closed-loop automation.
Centina’s software will help Blue Planet collect performance and event data from the devices, whether virtual or physical, across a netowrk. You can’t properly automate what you can’t monitor in detail, so continuously gathering such data is the lifeblood to next generation OSS.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but it’s a technology grab rather than a revenue acquisition, so the immediate effects on Ciena’s numbers will likely be minimal. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2019.
