A data center REIT can never have too much land in northern Virginia. Hence, it probably won’t surprise anyone that Digital Realty Trust is said to be about to acquire some more.
Assuming the MWAA Strategic Development Committee and BoD doesn’t veto the idea in a meeting this week, Digital Realty will be acquiring a tract of land on the western side of Dulles International Airport in an area that is known as the Dulles Western Lands. Dulles had bought some 854 acres there over a decade ago to build support facilities and a fourth runway. But they only used half of that, and made the rest available for sale via CBRE last winter.
Digital Realty is said to be paying $236.5M for 424 acres off of Old Ox Road, upon which there’s currently just grass and trees. That’s a substantial chunk of real estate that Digital Realty will likely be building on before long. It’s a guess, but I’ll bet they might just build a data center or two or three there, ha ha. If all goes well, the deal will close within a few weeks.
