Yesterday Windstream added another leg to its western longhaul expansion. They will be adding more dark fiber to the company’s infrastructure between Phoenix and the west coast.
More specifically, Windstream is launching longhaul connectivity from Phoenix northwest to Las Vegas with an additional 300 route miles of fiber. That will connect their northern route across the Rockies with the southern route between Texas and southern California that they just announced in May. With that gap closed, the next destination on their list is probably the Pacific Northwest in some form.
Windstream has been under pressure on some fronts due to its debt load, but has continued to press forward with its infrastructure. That includes this westward expansion but also its efforts to bite off a chunk of the growing SD-WAN opportunity.
