Over the weekend the Caribbean got a new cable system. Belize Telemedia Ltd and Huawei Marine have officially completed the SEUL cable project, connecting the island of Ambergris Caye to the mainland.
The cable was announced last year, and spans 32km while featuring 8 fiber pairs at 40x100Gbps each, or 32Tbps of design capacity. The new capacity will allow BTL to roll out 4G LTE and last mile broadband services island’s main town of San Pedro.
Sometimes I do have to scratch my head a bit on the numbers here. I know it’s probably just potential capacity and it’s no cheaper to use lesser components, but 32Tbps for an island populated by about 13,000 people works out to over 2Gbps of dedicated capacity for every man, woman, and child with plenty left over for the pets. Just saying…

A lot of these things do seem incredibly over marketed, perhaps even over engineered.
My guess is that the government is underwriting a large portion of this for future development (I.e., hotels, businesses, etc.). This PR is also probably aimed at American & Canadian entrepreneurs & retirees.
