One of the less noisy metro fiber players offered up a progress report this week as it celebrates its 20th anniversary. DQE Comunications says it has passed the 3,000 fiber route mile mark.
DQE’s network spans much of western Pennsylvania now, centered of course on the Pittsburgh metro area. Along the current 3,050 route mils of fiber they now hook up more than 1,500 buildings including 33 of the region’s business parks and 12 key data centers. This year DQE plans to stretch their reach down into West Virginia as well as building out fiber into five new business parks as it continues to take the organic path to growth.
The company, which now employs 70 people, is a subsidiary of the energy utility Duquesne Light Holdings. DQE has somehow managed to remain aloof from the waves of consolidation in the metro fiber world, although I’m sure they’ve had a few discussions over the years.
